Wax, resin, clay, carpaint, inkjet prints on archival paper, metall, magnets, mdf, oak, cardboard, video, 9.03 min (looped). and the world flows by me in a stream explores geology and paleontology, taking its starting point in the work and life of 19th-century English paleontologist Mary Anning. Over the course of a year, Sandström has traveled multiple times to Lyme Regis on England’s southern coast, where she has met with geologists, documented Mary’s fossil archive, and studied both their collections and Mary’s letters sent to her male colleagues and fossil collectors. The work reflects on time, memory, replicas, and ownership, where the fossil icon of an ammonite has been reproduced through 3D printing, based on photographs of one of Mary Anning’s fossil discoveries.
